The Volkswagen Association of Tasmania (VWAT) was formed in 1979 by Nino Bocchino after a lapse for some years of the original Volkswagen Club of Southern Tasmania Inc which was founded in 1960.
The Association has monthly events such as drives to picturesque spots for barbeques/picnics, navigation trials, counter meals or breakfast runs, annual “Show and Shine” and Christmas Party.
Meetings are held quarterly and a Newsletter distributed approximately 2 weeks later with stories and pictures of recent events to members and sponsors. We also exchange our Newsletter with interstate VW Clubs.
The Association caters for the social and common interest of Volkswagen enthusiasts and our members’ ages range from 18’s to 80’s, with models ranging from restored early Beetles of the fifties to Transporters, Kombis, Type IIIs, Karmann Ghias, Golfs, Polos and Passats through to models of the modern era.
Membership numbers vary during the year and over the last few years they have averaged 42 (renewed and new members) for the calendar year. At end 2008 we had 49 members and have reached 69 members to date. We have single membership, i.e. only one adult in a family needs to be a member. Any family member over 17 with their own car wishing to participate must have their own membership. The cost of membership is $25 per year.
